Letter to Governor Walker - Renee's Story

Ref: 1915 ( b and c ) Waiver Application

To Whom It May Concern:

We are the parents and guardians of our mentally and physically handicapped daughter, Renee Johnsen who is presently employed at the VARC, Inc. facility in Viroqua, WI.

We are very concerned about the proposal to eliminate the choice for Renee to continue her very purposeful job at VARC, Inc. She has had the opportunity to do 30 plus jobs and has enjoyed this very well organized, clean and productive work place for 14 years. She is very proud of her work and the accomplishment of earning her own spending money.  As parents and guardians of Renee, we wish to maintain the services that VARC, Inc. provides.

We are very fortunate to have a facility like VARC, Inc. located in this rural community. Eliminating this opportunity for Renee and the 400 other individuals would be devastating to their well being.

The referenced plan submitted to the Center for Medicaid Services does not allow access to facility based employment services, which will affect 10,000 individuals in WI and 400 in VARC, Inc.

Our request is that the full array of services to remain intact in Wisconsin for Renee, as well as thousands of people with disabilities, allowing them to continue to have a choice where they work, including facility-based prevocational programs.

We appreciate this opportunity to express our thoughts and concerns.

I think they need to keep it the way it is so the disabled can work whether it is s workshop or out in the community through supported employment.because i am also disabled.sheltered workshops or in the community
