Letter to Gov. Walker on Survival Coalition from A Team member/parent

Dear Governor Walker,

I have written before about my concerns for the possible elimination of my disabled son's pre-vocational program due to the CMS ruling. I want to write to you about the Survival Coalition. The Survival Coalition (whose key members are taxpayer funded) does not represent the tens of thousands of individuals, parents, family members, guardians and caregivers who support Community Rehabilitation Programs (CRP's). Because they have become aware of the groundswell of concern from so many family members over the waiver, they are frantically pushing a "takeastandontheplan" survey to suit their interests.

Respondents to this survey will not represent this large segment of the developmentally disabled community. Even so, I think you will find very few of even their survey respondents will advocate the elimination of pre-vocational and day services offered by CRP's.

The nationwide movement to close "sheltered workshops" and day programs is being driven by rights lawyers, academics, individuals who run "community" employment agencies, Obama Administration bureaucrats and high functioning self-advocates. They have great ideas about increasing employment opportunity, but they have bogus ideas about discrimination that are not based on a practical and common sense approach. I hope you will do all that is in your power to preserve the full range of service options for people with disabilities in our state.
